Our Story & Mission

Learn about our journey, values, and commitment to sustainable gardening

Our Humble Beginnings

GreenThumb Gardens started in 2008 as a small neighborhood plant nursery with a simple mission: to make gardening accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Our founder, Sarah Greenfield, began with just a modest greenhouse and a passion for sustainable gardening practices.

What began as a weekend plant stand quickly grew into a community hub as neighbors discovered the quality of our plants and Sarah's expert advice. Within two years, we expanded to a full-service garden center, offering not just plants but also landscaping services, educational workshops, and community gardening programs.

Today, we serve thousands of gardening enthusiasts across the region, but we've never lost sight of our roots. We still prioritize personalized service, sustainable practices, and community engagement above all else.

Growing Together

At GreenThumb Gardens, we believe that gardening is more than just a hobby—it's a way to build community, promote sustainability, and improve mental and physical wellbeing. Our commitment extends beyond selling plants to fostering a thriving gardening community.

We regularly host free workshops on topics ranging from basic plant care to advanced composting techniques. Our community garden initiative has helped establish over 15 neighborhood gardens in urban areas, providing fresh produce and green spaces in communities that need them most.

Each year, we donate thousands of plants to schools, community centers, and nonprofit organizations to help spread the joy of gardening to the next generation.

Our Sustainability Commitment

At GreenThumb Gardens, we believe that beautiful gardening and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. We've implemented numerous sustainable practices throughout our operations:

Our nursery uses collected rainwater for irrigation, and we've transitioned to 100% organic growing practices. We've eliminated plastic pots in favor of biodegradable alternatives and offer a pot return program for customers.

We maintain a no-chemical policy for pest management, relying instead on beneficial insects and companion planting. Our green energy initiative has allowed us to power our facilities with 80% solar energy, with a goal of reaching 100% by next year.

Through these efforts and more, we're working to not only help our customers create beautiful gardens but also to protect and preserve the natural environment that makes gardening possible.
